The Bamboo Room sign

ca. 1935

Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook

The signature exterior sign of William Sandlass Jr.'s Bamboo Room at Highland Beach, ca. 1930s. The letters spelling BAMBOO ROOM are themselves cut from bamboo, framed and hung inside a border of full bamboo poles — the visual thesis of the room made literal in the sign. Bamboo shipped from Cuba on William's own trip in the twenties gave the room its interior walls, furniture, and, on the way in, its first impression.
