A hand-colored postcard of Highland Beach ca. 1908 titled HIGHLAND BEACH, HIGHLANDS, N. J. — bathers in period costume in the surf, safety rope on posts, spectators on the sand

Hand-colored postcard — Highland Beach, Highlands, N.J., ca. 1908

ca. 1908

Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook

A hand-colored postcard captioned HIGHLAND BEACH, HIGHLANDS, N. J., postmarked ca. 1908. The safety rope on wooden posts runs from the sand out into the surf — the standard bathing-safety setup of the period. Women wear the full-length belted bathing dresses of the early twentieth century; men wear one-piece striped suits. The crowd of thirty-odd on the sand suggests a weekday afternoon at the peak of the day-tripper era, well before the Sandlass property became a members-only club in the late nineteen-forties.
