The Sandlass Beach bathhouse row at Highland Beach, ca. 1925 — the long low structure with HIGHLAND BEACH painted in white block letters across its seaward face, the cottage colony at left, the Basket Pavilion at right

Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook

The oceanside face of the Sandlass Beach bathhouses at Highland Beach, seen from the north, ca. 1925. The word HIGHLAND BEACH is painted in enormous letters across the seaward gables of the entire row — the resort's name legible from a passing ship. The pavilion complex is at right (the Basket Pavilion tower and dance hall roof visible), the cottage colony at left, and the boardwalk railing along the sand between. A calm off-season morning; the beach is empty; the light suggests April or May.
