Colorized postcard — the sawtooth Shrewsbury bridge from the Highlands, ca. 1910
ca. 1910
Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook
A hand-colored postcard view from the Highlands bluff looking north-east across the Shrewsbury river and Sandy Hook Bay, ca. 1910. The sawtooth iron-truss bridge — the wagon-and-pedestrian bridge that carried traffic to Highland Beach until the 1932 Route 36 high bridge replaced it — spans the frame at center. The bay is full of small sailing craft; the low pale strip of Sandy Hook runs across the top. The village of Highlands, with cottages and steepled church, sits in the foreground.
