Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook

The Sandlass Beach Club parking lot on a summer afternoon, ca. 1940 — sedans of the immediate prewar era at left, the picket-fenced club entrance at center. Above and behind the club stand the 1862 brownstone Twin Lights on the Highlands ridge, unmistakable against the sky. To their left, the Route 36 high bridge (completed 1932) crosses the Shrewsbury. A man in white walks toward the entrance. The old ferry-pier bridge, its trusses partly visible at left, is already being phased out.
