The Basket Pavilion at Highland Beach, ca. 1898 — a three-story wooden dance hall with a hexagonal tower topped by a spire, in one of the earliest surviving photographs of the pavilion complex. At left, a long open-sided shelter serves as the trolley and station platform; a group of Edwardian-dressed passengers waits with a phonograph horn on a pole (a Roebling loudspeaker used to project band music across the beach). At right, a small carnival building labeled BOWLING ALLEYS · SHOOTING GALLERY; horse-drawn carriages wait between the two.
