Sunday Morning, Highland Beach — colorized postcard, ca. 1912
ca. 1912
Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook
A hand-colored postcard captioned SUNDAY MORNING, HIGHLAND BEACH, N.J. — a long line of early Model-T era touring cars parked outside the small clapboard bath-house office at the beach entrance, ca. 1912. The passengers have already crossed the boardwalk and are on the beach beyond; a small group of them are visible on the horizon line at right. This is the automobile beginning to replace the steamboat and railroad as the Sandlass property's primary access — and the moment Sunday-morning day-trippers become the dominant clientele.
