Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook

A hand-colored postcard view of the Highland Beach bathhouse row with the swimming area in the Shrewsbury foreground, ca. 1908. The long low structure elevated on wooden pilings carries HIGHLAND BEACH painted in enormous letters across its face; the roller-coaster trestle rises at the top of the frame behind it. A wooden floating raft sits in the middle of the swimming area with a dozen bathers on it; more swim in the water around it; a lone rowboat is at right. Turn-of-the-twentieth-century bathing on the bay side of the peninsula.
