Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook

A colorized postcard view of the Sandlass Pavilion at bathing hour, ca. 1905–1910. The three-story wooden Basket Pavilion dance hall is in the center of the frame with women in Edwardian dresses on the verandas; below them the porch shelters more spectators; on the sand and in the water, bathers in period costume follow the safety rope. Bathhouse rows recede at left and right. The wooden trestle at the upper left is the Highland Beach Gravity Railroad still in operation.
