Bowling & Billiards, Choice Fruits, Imported & Domestic Cigars, ca. 1900
ca. 1900
Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook
A period photograph of one of the Highland Beach concession buildings, ca. 1900. A two-story clapboard corner storefront under a hip roof. The upper signboard reads BOWLING & BILLIARDS; the lower reads CHOICE FRUITS · IMPORTED & DOMESTIC CIGARS. A shopkeeper in a white shirt and dark trousers and a woman in a full-length dress stand at the entrance; a produce counter is visible through the open window. The Highland Beach resort was more than the beach — it was a small concession town with its own storefronts.
