Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook

A hand-colored postcard of the bathing crowd at Highland Beach with the Sandlass Pavilion complex behind, ca. 1912. A dense crowd of several hundred bathers packs the sand and the shallow water; the pavilion complex rises at center with three American flags atop its towers. A row of striped bathhouses labeled with a large H sits at left. Women in full-length wool bathing suits, men in one-piece striped suits — the standard Edwardian bathing dress.
