Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook

The Highland Beach train station platform on a summer Saturday, ca. 1928. The New Jersey Southern Railway platform at left is packed with day-trippers with parasols; the parallel road at right is packed with 1920s Model A- and Buick-era automobiles. The hip-roofed Highland Beach station building sits at right; the gable-roofed Sandlass Pavilion complex behind it. The Highlands ridge fills the horizon. The rail-plus-automobile crossover moment of the resort — with both modes still full.
