Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook

A hand-colored postcard of a New Jersey Southern Railway passenger train arriving at Highland Beach on a summer afternoon, ca. 1908. The train — a maroon-lettered five-car consist behind a small 4-4-0 steam locomotive — is stopped alongside the beachfront platform. A crowd of Edwardian passengers with parasols and straw boaters spills across the platform to the pavilion. Roses and hydrangeas in ornamental beds line the platform edge. This is the classic day-tripper arrival — steamer from Manhattan to Sandy Hook, then the NJS train to Highland Beach.
