A hand-colored postcard view of a Sandy Hook Steamer — one of the large side-wheelers of the Central Railroad of New Jersey's steamboat service — passing the Highland Beach shore, ca. 1910. The steamer, with its distinctive side-mounted paddle wheel, tall single stack, and wooden upper-deck superstructure, ran the Manhattan–Sandy Hook route as the water leg of the day-tripper trip to Highland Beach. Passengers rode the steamer from West 42nd Street, transferred to the NJS train at Sandy Hook, and were at the beach in under two hours. A wooden rowboat sits beached at right; the Highland Beach cottage row is visible on the far shore.
