ca. 1918

Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook

A hand-colored postcard of the Highland Beach swimming area from a boat-eye view, ca. 1918. A wooden diving platform juts from the sand at left with a group of bathers standing on it in the wool bathing suits of the era. The bathhouse row behind — carrying HIGHLAND BEACH painted in enormous letters across its face — is elevated on wooden pilings; a bathhouse office building at far left carries an American flag. Colored bathing caps and striped suits distinguish the swimmers in the water; several dozen bathers fill the shallow foreground.
