Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook

A hand-colored postcard of the Sandlass entertainment complex at Highland Beach, ca. 1912. At left, the Bamboo Garden cabaret and airdrome carries a large signboard reading BAMBOO GARDEN · RECTOR'S FAMOUS BAND · NOW HERE FOR THE SEASON · CABARET & DANCING. At center, a three-story gingerbread Victorian building with a hexagonal tower — one of the pavilion offices — with red-and-white striped awnings shading the ground floor. A single early automobile — a boxy touring car with folded top — is parked at the entrance. Women in long dresses cross the plaza; a small group waits at the pavilion office. The evening entertainment economy at Highland Beach in its pre-war form.
