Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook

A hand-colored postcard of a regatta afternoon at Highland Beach, ca. 1908 — a large crowd of spectators lines the shore in the foreground, watching sailing races on the Shrewsbury. The bathhouse row runs across the middle of the frame with HIGHLAND BEACH painted in enormous letters across its full length. The Sandlass Pavilion complex stands at right with people crowding both floors of its veranda. A red-roofed cottage stands at far left; a fleet of small rowboats lines the shallow water at bottom left. This is the resort at its Edwardian peak.
