ca. 1892
Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook (approximate)
A second surviving photograph of the Great Switchback R.R. at Highland Beach, ca. 1892. The same two-story loading tower with the wooden coaster trestle running down to the second tower — but photographed from a different angle. Seven men and women stand on the loading platform under the smaller GREAT SWITCHBACK R.R. signboard; the larger signboard reading GREAT SWITCHBACK R.R. THE FINEST SPORT OF EARTH 3¢ ROUND TRIP 3¢ hangs above the ticket window on the front. Two men in period dress and wooden barrels at foreground left; a passenger car stands under the platform at right; the beach visible at far left.
