Inside the Bamboo Room — the hula mural corner and jukebox, ca. 1948
ca. 1948
Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook
The east end of the Bamboo Room bar at Highland Beach with the Hawaiian-dancer mural and the club's Wurlitzer-style jukebox, ca. 1948. The mural — a hula figure, palm trees, mountain-and-bay coastline in oil paint — dominates the wall at center. Real bamboo poles frame the mural on both sides, and the wall is otherwise entirely faced with vertical bamboo. Bentwood chairs and small wooden tables in the foreground. A Wurlitzer 1015 or similar jukebox at the far right, backlit. This is the room's signature detail — the interior that made the Bamboo Room what it was for two generations of members.
