A period wood engraving of the unfinished granite fort at the tip of Sandy Hook — the Third System coastal fortification begun in 1857 to command the approach to New York Harbor, still under construction when the Civil War ended. From the water, the fort's long north face runs across the middle distance with a spar- bristled work-yard on the shore behind; a fishing schooner passes in the foreground; a US flag flies from a small mast on the shore at right. The work was never completed; it was demolished in the 1890s to make way for the batteries of Fort Hancock. This engraving was published in the Illustrated London News on 29 April 1865, the month the war ended.
