The launcher-area blast door of Nike Hercules missile site NY-56 at Fort Hancock, ca. 1962. One of a ring of surface-to-air installations guarding New York Harbor from Soviet bomber attack. Sandy Hook's magazines were later revealed by historians to have held nuclear-tipped Hercules warheads — a fact not disclosed at the time. The site was deactivated in 1974 and the concrete works survive in Hartshorne Woods County Park.
