A stereograph card from the H. C. White Company of North Bennington, Vermont, copyrighted 1904 — the pilot boat New Yorker standing off Sandy Hook while a Sandy Hook pilot is rowed across in the small transfer boat to take a big steamer through the bar. Two paired photographs on a single card, for viewing through a stereoscope: on each panel the pilot boat rides at left flying a small pilot's pennant at her mast; the rowboat carrying the pilot crosses at center; the ropes of the receiving vessel drop into frame at the near left corner. The Sandy Hook Pilots' Benevolent Association had rotated a boat on this station since 1694; by 1904 the boats were steam-and-sail schooners like New Yorker, putting a pilot aboard every deep-water vessel that came to New York.
