Sandy Hook, September 1609
1609-09-07
Sandy Hook peninsula (traditional Colman burial site) (approx)
The tradition holds that crewman John Colman, killed by an arrow to the throat in a skirmish with an unknown party of Indians on September 6, 1609, was buried on Sandy Hook the following day. The exact location is disputed. The point known today as Colman's Point is one candidate; there are others.
