Inside the Bamboo Garden Air-Drome, c. 1920 · colorized
ca. 1920
Highland Beach, foot of Sandy Hook
A colorized reinterpretation of the Gateway NRA photograph of the open-air theatre. The bamboo courses of the screen surround, the walls and the pillars carry their real color for the first time, and the two lamps over the cabanas at right are lit. The source negative is a daylight exposure with a blown-out white sky; this pass reads it as night — a deliberate editorial choice, since an air-drome only ever showed pictures after dark. The sign over the screen still reads BAMBOO-GARDEN AIR-DROME · PICTURES & DANCING COMBINED · ONE ADMISSION, and the room is still empty before a show.
