On April 12, 1782, a party of Loyalist irregulars under the command of a man named Richard Lippincott brought patriot militia captain Joshua Huddy from a British prison ship in New York Harbor to the Highlands shore and hanged him from a makeshift gibbet at the water's edge in retaliation for the killing of Loyalist Philip White in a New Jersey militia action. A hand-lettered placard was pinned to Huddy's body. It read *Up goes Huddy for Philip White.*
