Bay Avenue, Highlands, looking east

Bay Avenue at five-thirty on a summer Saturday morning at the height of the party-boat era — three marquees lit for the Miss Belmar V, Doris & Ed's, and the Jersey Angler; a line of American sedans parked along the curb; the crews assembling gear on the pier at the seaward end of the block. The party-boat economy is what the town does before anyone else in the state is up. This is the picture of Highlands most fifty-year-old residents grew up inside.
