The text of the act establishing Gateway National Recreation Area — one of the first three urban units in the National Park System, signed by President Nixon on October 27, 1972. Section 2 enumerates the four founding units; the first named is the Sandy Hook Unit at 1,665 acres. The act deliberately permitted continued Army use of Fort Hancock through the peninsula transition, which lasted until the flag came down on December 31, 1974.
