The view from the summit at approximately 9:20 a.m. on September 11, 2001 — the smoke from the burning towers visible across the harbor. The residents of Highlands who could get to the top of the ridge that morning watched from Mount Mitchill; it is the highest point on the Atlantic coast between the Yucatán and Maine, and — on a clear day — you can see the New York skyline forty miles away.
