Bay Avenue, October 30, 2012 — the morning after

Bay Avenue, Highlands

The same block on the morning after landfall. Floodwaters receding. Mud line on every wall at chest height. A small fishing boat marooned on the sidewalk. A National Guard truck at the end of the block. Every ceiling in every building has the same horizontal line on it. Every kitchen has that same line at chest height on the far wall. It is quiet. That is the part nobody knows to expect.
