The charter membership roster of the first Highlands fire company, chartered December 3, 1900 — nine months after the borough itself. Twenty-four names on the founding list; twelve are the direct ancestors of families still in Highlands today. The Bahrs brothers are on it. So is a Sandlass and a Meloro. The names are the town, and the town is the names.
