N. Currier's lithograph of the wreck, published in New York the same year and deposited in the Clerk's Office on 27 February 1846 — twelve days after the storm — shown here as a short loop moving from the monochrome plate into an AI-colorized reinterpretation. The packet ship *John Minturn* was bound from New Orleans to New York under Captain Dudley Stark with fifty-one people aboard; caught in a February northeaster; struck a sandbar three hundred yards off the beach at Mantoloking, in what is today Ocean County; broken up after eighteen hours of rescue attempts. Thirty-eight of the fifty-one died, Stark and his family among them; thirteen came off alive. The scandal that followed — over shore "wreckers" accused of plunder — was what pushed Congress to act.
