The Hartshorne Family
Also recorded as: Hartshorn
The Hartshorne family arrived at the Bayshore in 1674 and held the ground that most of Sandy Hook, the Navesink Highlands, and what is now Middletown Township was legally read from for the next hundred and thirty years. Richard Hartshorne's 1677 and 1678 transactions with the Navesink Lenape are the deeds every later chain of title in this region runs through. His grandson's cabin, put up around 1720 at Portland Poynt, is the visitor center at Hartshorne Woods Park today.
