English Quaker, born in Hathern, Leicestershire, in 1641. Emigrated to Rhode Island in the late 1660s and settled at what he called Portland Poynt — on the Bayshore side of the Navesink Highlands, in what is now Middletown Township — in 1674. In 1677 he acquired a 2,320-acre tract from the Navesink Lenape with the East Jersey proprietors as overseers; in August 1678 he paid thirteen shillings to resolve a dispute with the Navesink over what that first deed had actually transferred. By the late 1670s his holdings covered most of Sandy Hook and the Highlands. He died at Portland Poynt on May 22, 1722. Hartshorne Woods Park bears the name.
