Mr. Cartmen

1900–1980

Mr. Cartmen was the swim instructor at the Sandlass Beach Club for a generation of Highlands and Middletown children. He carried a clipboard and a whistle. He never once, in the recollection of the Sandlass family, set foot in the water. Hank Sandlass named him the way a boy names a landmark. The spelling of his surname is preserved as Hank rendered it in the 2004 oral history — awaiting the roster book that will confirm it.
