Estêvão Gomes

Also recorded as: Esteban Gómez, Estevão Gomes

A Portuguese pilot of African descent sailing for Spain who, having deserted Magellan's expedition, surveyed the North American coast in 1525 and entered this harbor, naming the river for Saint Anthony. His survey fed Diogo Ribeiro's 1529 world map, which labeled the coast Tierra de Esteban Gómez. He carried at least fifty-eight Indigenous people back to Spain to be sold.
