Person

John Colman

d. 1609

A mate on the Halve Maen under Henry Hudson. On 6 September 1609, sounding the Narrows by boat, he was killed by an arrow to the throat in a skirmish with an unknown party and buried the next day on Sandy Hook — the first European known to be buried on this harbor. The point named for him has never been securely located.
