A Sicilian immigrant who came to the shore by way of a ship into Boston and a life in Newark, and who in 1945 opened Johnny's Landing on the Highlands waterfront. He did not invent fishing here; he industrialized the trip — boats on a schedule, a price on a seat, and a morning on the ocean available to a man with no boat, no gear and no connections. The Newark Star-Ledger outdoors columnist Henry Schaefer credited him with developing the Highlands charter and head-boat business outright. Johnny's Landing became the Highlands Marina, and the club founded at its bar in 1960 took the dock's name.
