John "Jack" Bahrs

b. 1880

Also recorded as: Jack Bahrs

Grandson of a tall-ship captain and, with his wife Florence, a necktie manufacturer in the Dutch Neck section of Newark before a robbery of the shop's silk and finished stock sent the couple to Highlands for good. Started with a boat rental on Cedar Street and the clam chowder he cooked for the renters. In 1917 bought the beached houseboat and the beach under it, jacked it above the waterline, and opened Bahrs Landing on the spot it still occupies.
