Second mate on the Halve Maen and — through his shipboard journal — the first English-language chronicler of the New Jersey coast. Juet's day-by-day entries for September 1609 supply the founding lines of Sandy Hook's written history, including the anchorage description that appears at the top of every subsequent Highlands narrative. Two years later he sailed with Hudson again into the ice of James Bay, joined the mutiny that set the captain adrift, and died on the return voyage.
