On the twenty-eighth of February, 1881, Anthony Reckless and his wife Mary sold Wardell Beach — the north end of the Sandy Hook spit, seventy-four ocean-front lots — to the Highland Beach Association for ten thousand dollars. The Association renamed the tract Highland Beach, subdivided it, and set in motion the seaside resort that ran for eight decades. Reckless was a Red Bank merchant and one of the founding investors of the resort era on the Shrewsbury shore. The deed of sale is the deed that starts this chapter.
