Mary S. Reckless

1838–1899

Mary S. Reckless was co-signatory to the February 1881 deed that transferred Wardell Beach — the future Highland Beach — to the Highland Beach Association. Under nineteenth-century New Jersey law, married women's property required their spouse's countersign for transfer; Mary's signature is what made the sale legally clean. She was the wife of Anthony Reckless and, by the time the Highland Beach Improvement Company began construction in 1887, the co-recipient of the ten-thousand-dollar sale price.
