Popamora was among the Navesink Lenape sachems who signed the 1664 deed that transferred a large tract at the mouth of the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers to English settlers. His name — recorded in colonial documents in that spelling — is one of the few contemporary written traces of Navesink leadership from the year the English took New Netherland. What that deed meant to the Navesink at the time is not a question colonial records can answer. Popamora Point in Highlands carries the name today.
