Henry Sandlass was born upstairs in the family building at Highland Beach in the middle of a hurricane. He inherited the beach club from his father William in 1938, married Midge Sheehan just before shipping out in 1942, and ran the private Sandlass Beach Club through the postwar decades. Ash Wednesday, 1962, destroyed the bathhouses and collapsed the Bamboo Room porch; Henry rebuilt the whole property in three months. Days before opening day the state took it by eminent domain. He sued, won three hundred fifty thousand dollars in December 1962, and left in 1963.
