William Sandlass Jr.

1863–1938

In January of 1893 William Sandlass Jr. leased Lots 23 through 26 of Highland Beach at five hundred dollars a year and made a life on that strip of sand for the next forty-five years. He ran bathhouses, built the Basket Pavilion dance hall and the Bamboo Room, brought bamboo home from Cuba to line an outdoor movie theater. In 1920 he bought the leased lots outright for a dollar. He died in November 1938, weeks after a hurricane damaged the family building he had called home for four decades.
